Old Town Alexandria is situated on the western shoreline of the Potomac River. It was originally laid out when the town was founded in 1749 and comprises the oldest portion of the city. The area is located in the eastern and southeastern sections of the city. Old Town is an eclectic mix of antique shops, art galleries and restaurants as well as historic buildings and landmarks. The grid plan of the historic district produces a neighborhood of square blocks. River cruise boats now dock at wharfs that were once part of a bustling colonial and Civil War seaport. The Washington Metro System opened a new commuter stop on King Street in 1983. This has led to gentrification of some historically African American communities and other portions of the neighborhood.
In this section of Alexandria, visitors will find the Lee-Fendall House. The estate is the boyhood home of Robert E. Lee. Market Square hosts the oldest continually operating farmer’s market in the country. There are museums dedicated to fine arts and the city’s history, such as the Torpedo Factory and the Lyceum. Gadsby’s Tavern was once a social and business focal point frequented by many of the nation’s founding fathers. Monuments and historic buildings provide a glimpse into the city’s past. There is a statue that honors residents who died for the Confederacy and a replica of George Washington’s townhouse. Visitors can explore historic houses of worship and cemeteries, including the Old Presbyterian Meeting House.
The revitalized waterfront has cobblestone streets and a scenic view of the river. Visitors can explore the area on foot or by horse-drawn carriage. A portion of the Mount Vernon Trail passes through Old Town Alexandria.
