Situated 13 miles off the coast of the Ocean State, Block Island has a rich history that dates back more than 3,000 years. Once home to the Niantic tribe, the 9.7-acre island is surrounded by rocky shoals that have claimed many ships, including the 220-ton Princess Augusta. John Greenleaf Whittier used this story as the inspiration for his 1867 poem “The Wreck of the Palatine.” Recreational divers can explore various shipwrecks just off shore. The rocky coastline and rough seas led to construction of the North and Southeast Lighthouses, which have become iconic symbols of the island. The Nature Conservancy has included Block Island on its list of the Western Hemisphere’s “Last Great Places.”

This summer resort has hiking trails, rolling hills and coastal grasslands. The soaring 200-foot cliffs of Mohegan Bluffs provide breathtaking views of the ocean and the sandy beach. The black-sand beach of the sheltered Dorys Cove is a place where Block Islanders picnic while observing wildlife. Much of the island is set aside as a nature preserve. The result is miles of trails through an unspoiled habitat for peregrine falcons and ring-necked pheasants. Seals occasionally bask on the beach rocks. Children will enjoy up close views of camels, llamas, emus and other interesting creatures at the animal farm.

The natural beauty of this quintessential New England community provides a lovely backdrop for quaint shops and eateries where you can savor pizza strips and johnnycakes. Local eateries also serve mouth-watering fried clam strips, chowder and clam strips with lemonade or coffee milk, the state’s beverage. You can examine Native American, agricultural and maritime artifacts at the Block Island Historical Society, which is located in a beautiful two-story Victorian house.
