Located on the Cumberland River, Nashville is the second largest city in Tennessee. As the state capital, it is a regional center for politics, commerce and culture. Home of the world-famous Grand Ole Opry, Nashville earned its reputation as the “Country Music Capital of the World.” Situated in the north-central part of the Volunteer State, the city is also a fast-growing hub for manufacturing, healthcare and transportation as well as a center for higher education, which has inspired the moniker “Athens of the South”. Situated in the river basin, Nashville is flanked by the Cumberland Highlands and Cumberland Plateau. The geography creates brief, cool winters and hot, humid summers with long, mild springs and autumns.
Nashville has become a renowned recording center for large and independent music labels covering a wide variety of genres, such as rock, rap and gospel. As a result, it is also nicknamed “Music City, USA.” While music, dining and shopping attract tourists to the legendary nightlife found in the historic District and Broadway neighborhoods, there are numerous other things to see and do in and around Nashville. These include experiencing museums, historical sites and outdoor recreational activities along with cultural celebrations held throughout the year, such as arts and crafts festivals, sporting events and the State Fair. Enjoy Bicentennial Mall, a 19-acre urban state park located near the state capitol. You can also visit Belle Meade Plantation, the “Queen of Tennessee Plantations” and the Hermitage, home to Andrew Jackson, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans and 7th President of the United States. History buffs, nature lovers and music fans will discover a wide assortment of attractions that celebrate Nashville’s rich and fascinating culture.
