Draped in Spanish moss and Southern charm, Savannah is a vibrant port city made famous by what locals call “the book,” John Berendt’s best-selling novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The birthplace of the Georgia colony in 1733, the city was the destination of General Sherman’s legendary Civil War March to the Sea. Left untorched by Union soldiers, many of Savannah’s historic colonial and antebellum homes remain intact. Today, visitors can see and tour many of these buildings, which encompass several hundred years of Savannah’s history. Many have been restored to their former glory. These include the Owens-Thomas House, which houses the Telfair Museum, the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts, and the Mercer-Williams House, site of the event that inspired the novel.

The city is laid out against a collage of squares that are surrounded by churches, museums and other architectural gems in addition to displaying statues, memorials and other public works of art. The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist adorns Lafayette Square. Chippewa Square is the location of the bus stop in Forrest Gump. Wright Square, one of the oldest in Savannah, is home to the city’s original courthouse. Forsyth Park, one of many in Savannah, is crowned by a large ornamental fountain. Visitors can tour the city’s well-known cemeteries and view the grave markers of signatories to the Declaration of Independence, victims from Savannah’s dueling era and other notable figures from American history. The graveyards, such as Bonaventure, Colonial Park and Laurel Grove, display a wide range of decorative monuments and memorial sculptures. You can explore these and many other sights while visiting this highly walkable city.
