Historic Savannah cemeteries invite you to explore the enduring mystique of the city. Amidst fragrant wisteria, blooming magnolias and enshrouded live oaks you will discover intriguing final resting places. The hallowed grounds are popular haunts for people who want to trace their family history or investigate ghostly legends and tales of the macabre. Located in the heart of the Historic District, Colonial Park Cemetery is one of the city’s earliest burial grounds. Opened in 1750 and expanded in 1789, it is the resting place for a signatory of the Declaration of Independence and gentlemen who died defending their honor in duels. Graves in this cemetery received the bodies of Savannahians who died during the yellow fever epidemic. As the wind wails overhead, you can feel the desolation of unrequited love and the terror of a man who was lynched for his alleged crimes.

Laurel Grove Cemetery has the distinction of being the oldest African-American cemetery still in use and the final resting place for hundreds of Confederate soldiers and generals. The remains of Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low are interred here as well. Bonaventure is Savannah’s most famous cemetery due to its prominent role in the New York Times bestseller Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. This graveyard was once the home of the “Bird Girl” statue from the cover of “the book,” as it is called by Savannahians.

A tour of these cemeteries reveals tombstone ranging from simple grave markers to elaborate decorative memorials, including one shaped like a piano. The names include the who’s who of Savannah, soldiers who gave the last full measure of devotion and people of color who helped shape the city.
