Albert Einstein Memorial

The memorial that commemorates Albert Einstein is situated in a grove of trees on the campus of the National Academy of Sciences. The tranquil setting, on Constitution Avenue, NW, is near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The bronze statue depicts Einstein in a seated position with manuscripts papers in his left hand. The larger-than-life figure, by renowned sculptor Robert Berks, is 12 feet tall and weighs four tons. The figure rests upon a semi-circular, three-step bench made from white granite. The bench sits atop a round base of emerald-pearl granite that was quarried in Norway. The semi-circular bench is intended to represent a series of steps upon which the figure sits as if in contemplation.

Three of Einstein’s famous equations are inscribed on the manuscripts. These are the general theory of relativity, the photoelectric effect and E=MC². There are inscriptions on three panels located on the reverse side of the bench. The inscriptions are Einstein’s quotes on preferring to live in a country with liberty, joy and amazement regarding the wonder of the world and the search for the truth. There are studs embedded in the monument’s base that represent the exact position of certain celestial bodies when the memorial was dedicated at midday on April 22, 1979.

The memorial appears in the title sequence for the 20th season of Sesame Street.
