Martin Luther King, Jr National Memorial

Washington, D.C.’s Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial celebrates the life and lasting legacy of one of history’s most influential humanitarians, from his early pastoral career, to work with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, to leadership in the Civil Rights Movement. The memorial was proposed in 1984 by five Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity brothers. After a lengthy process involving legal wrangling and fundraising, ground was broken in 2006 and the memorial was dedicated in October, 2011.

Today, the 30-foot likeness of Dr. King and surrounding elements honors his contributions to the struggle for equality for all. Set on a four-acre plot bordering a tidal basin, the sound and sight of water is used to represent the “rolling down” of justice that King fought for. Hundreds of Yoshino cherry blossom and crepe myrtle trees bloom through the spring and summer, reminding visitors of King’s message of hope, endurance and faith. Perhaps the most striking feature in the memorial is the Inscription Wall, a 450-foot-long granite crescent inscribed with 14 of Dr. King’s most influential quotes.
